'Baxter', 1918
This pencil sketch, signed 'JMS', depicts a Unit Administrator of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) during World War One (1914-1918). The WAAC was formed in 1917 to free up valuable and experienced soldiers from the rear areas for front line service. The women of the WAAC replaced them, undertaking a variety of roles that were crucial to the war effort.
