Letter No 1 from Commander-in-Chief on non-fraternisation, March 1945

Once the British Army first crossed into enemy territory its soldiers were expressly forbidden to have any social contact with Germans. In March 1945, Field Marshal Montgomery sent a letter outlining this policy to the soldiers of 21st Army Group. Its main focus was on enforcing a sense of defeat on the Germans.

From papers of I R Beddington (née Farquhar), Auxiliary Territorial Service, attached to Royal Army Medical Corps, 25 British Military Hospital in Munster, North Rhine Westphalia.
