The Bersaglieri (or marksmen) were created by General Alessandro La Marmora of the Piedmont-Sardinian Army in 1836. They were highly trained, quick-moving light infantry who fought independently or as skirmishers, much like the British Army's riflemen. The Bersaglieri fought with great distinction at the Battle of the Tchernaya on 16 August 1855.
