Major-General (later General) Sir James Hope Grant (1808-1875) was a British officer with a wealth of experience in the colonial campaigns of the mid-19th century. He distinguished himself in the 1st China War, the Anglo-Sikh Wars and in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny and was thus ideally suited to command the expedition against China in 1860, a position that he executed with consummate skill. In this picture he is shown wearing the iconic 'poshteen' sheepskin coat from the North West Frontier of India.
