Commemorative plaque, Helen du Gard Grey, wife of Major General William du Gard Gray, Coke's Rifles, Punjab Frontier Force, Christmas Day, 1911
Commemorative plaque made by J Wippell and Company Limited, Exeter and London, from the Punjab Frontier Force Memorial Wall S10, 'Erected by their many friends in India', 1911.
After the Partition of India in August 1947 the Frontier Force units were divided between the Indian and Pakistan Armies. It was then decided that the memorials to the Punjab Frontier Force, the 'Piffers', erected in the garrison churches should be relocated to England, and in 1951 they were installed in the Parish Church of St Luke's, Chelsea.
This plaque is inscribed with a biblical quote from the New Testament's Book of James,
'The Wisdom that is from Above is FirstPure, then Peaceable, Gentle, and Easy tobe Intreated, Full of Mercy and Good Fruits,Without Partiality, and without Hypocrisy'.
