'The Silent Heroes of 1914-1918', 1918 (c)

Charcoal and chalk over pencil drawing, Corporal John Edwin Noble (1876-1941, Army Veterinary Corps, 1918 (c).

A British trooper, mounted on a horse, leading a bedraggled string of three horses and a mule through mud and the rain, on the Western Front.

Noble served with No 8 Veterinary Hospital in France during World War One (1914-1918). Noble's works show the suffering animals underwent on the Western Front including the effects of gas and parasites as well as the efforts made by the veterinary staff to ease their suffering.
