Hugh Shaw (1830-1904) was awarded the Victoria Cross for 'his gallant conduct at the skirmish near Nukumam, in New Zealand, on 24th Jan. 1865', when he and four privates of his regiment rescued a wounded comrade from a position only 30 yards away from enemy cover, and while under heavy fire.
