Letter from Lieutenant William Staveley to his mother, 19 June 1815

Sent from Waterloo in the days after the battle, the letter is a brief note advising of the outcome of the struggle and states that he had 'escaped having only a spent shot in the guts which did not penetrate'.

During the Waterloo campaign Staveley served with the Royal Staff Corps, arriving with a detachment of the latter in the Netherlands in April 1815. He was on the headquarters staff at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.

From a collection of 179 letters and notes, 1811-1860 by Lieutenant General William Staveley, (1784-1854), and Captain E Staveley.
