Letter from Lieutenant William Staveley to his mother, 29 April 1812
Sent during the Peninsular War (1808-1814), the letter describes the storming of Badajoz and the subsequent plundering by British troops. Staveley's unit did not take part in the assault
Staveley served on the staff of the quartermaster-general throughout the conflict, and was present at Talavera, Fuentes de Onoro, Vittoria, the battle of the Pyrenees, and Toulouse, besides the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, and many minor actions.
