Pattern 1822 infantry officer's sword, 1822-1828 (c)

This sword was owned by John Spurrier who served with the Commissariat Department from around 1807, including service in the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Although the Commissariat was a uniformed civilian service that supplied the Army, its officials wore quasi-military uniform and carried arms. Spurrier's blade is pipe-backed and plain except for the cypher of King George IV on either side. The brass hilt is also inlaid with the royal cypher.
