Prince Edward was the son of Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Princess Ida of Saxe-Meiningen. In 1841 he joined the 67th (South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot as an ensign. He married Lady Augusta Katherine Gordon-Lennox in 1851. Edward transferred to the Grenadier Guards and served in the Crimean War (1854-1856). Prince Edward subsequently served as aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and his military appointments included General Officer Commanding the Southern District and Commander-in-Chief, Ireland. He retired in 1890 and was made a field marshal in 1897. He died in London in 1902.
