In 1904 there were four volunteer battalions (numbered 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) of The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Four years later in 1908, with the formation of the Territorial Force, the volunteer battalions became the 7th, 8th 9th and 10th Battalions.
