Full dress tunic, overalls and fez, Major (later Lieutenant-Colonel) Dawson Cornelius Greene whilst serving with the Turkish Contingent
Greene joined the 43rd (The Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) as an ensign on 3 July 1840, gaining his lieutenantcy on 14 January 1842. Promoted to captain on 11 December 1849, he served in Cape Colony in the 8th Frontier War during 1850-1853 before receiving his majority on 7 November 1855. During the Crimean War (1854-1856) Greene served with one of the 16 regiments of infantry belonging to the Turkish contingent and his uniform, blue with red piping, reflects the French inspiration behind the Turks' newly westernised military dress.
