Camp of the Fourth Division, 15 July 1855

Watercolour and pencil by William Simpson (1823-1899). Reproduced as Plate 9 in Simpson's 'Seat of War in the East', Second Series, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, London, 1856.

The key which accompanied the print after this watercolour detailed the distribution of the regiments within the 4th Division's camp in the Crimea. To the left are the tents of the 57th (The West Middlesex), 20th (The East Devonshire) and 17th (The Leicestershire) regiments, with those of the 54th (The West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot to their right. Behind them are the tents of the Royal Regiment of Artillery attached to the 2nd Division, with the French camp beyond. The two huts behind the mounted officers mark the position of the Royal Regiment of Artillery of the 4th Division, with the camp of the Guards and Highlanders in lines beyond. In the centre of the picture are the tents of the 39th (The Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot, those of the 49th (The Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Regiment of Foot and the Rifle Brigade far right.
