A group of Hazaras, 1880

Photograph by Benjamin Simpson (1831-1923), 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1880.

The Hazaras were of Mongolian origin and largely Shia Muslim in religion. They were descendants of military colonists introduced into Afghanistan by Jenghiz Khan, some of whom moved south into India. They spoke Persian and were often persecuted by the majority Sunni Muslim Pathan community of Afghanistan.
