Private C R Barker, New Zealand Force, carrying ammunition and water to the firing line under heavy fire, Chunuk Bair, Dardanelles, 8 August 1915

Watercolour en grisaille by Stephen T Dadd, 1915 (c).

On 8 August 1915, 760 New Zealanders attacked the Ottoman positions on the heights of Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli peninsula. By the end of the day, only 49 remained uninjured. This watercolour commemorates Private Charles Robert Barker, who received a Distinguished Conduct Medal for transporting supplies and evacuating casualties during the battle. Barker was discharged from the Army as unfit for service in 1916. He became a butcher and died in New Plymouth in 1962.
