A 6-inch howitzer in a camouflaged position on the Doiran Front, 1916

Lantern slide, World War One, Salonika (1914-1918), 1916.

The Allied army in the Balkans was unfairly criticised at the time as a pointless waste of men and material with the troops there having an easy time. The fact that the campaign was brought to a successful conclusion in 1918 with the decisive defeat of Bulgaria, liberation of Serbia and strategic exposure of Austria and Turkey contradicts this view. Despite these successes, the Balkan front has become one of the forgotten 'side-shows' of the war.

From a box of 111 slides associated with the Balkans, 1914-1918.
