'HMS Goliath on the line', 1914 (c)

Photograph, World War One, War at Sea (1914-1918), 1914 (c).

The 'Goliath' was a Canopus-class battleship built at Chatham Dockyard and commissioned in 1900. Mothballed after service in the Far East she was recalled at the beginning of World War One. She participated in the blockading of the German cruiser 'Königsberg' during the East Africa campaign and supported the landings at Gallipoli in 1915. On 13 May 1915 the 'Goliath' was sunk in Morto Bay off Cape Helles by a Turkish torpedo boat with the loss of 570 men.

From an album of 18 photographs, 1914-1915.
