Private James Hamilton Mackenzie was serving with the Royal Engineers when he made this sketch near Moshi, Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in East Africa during World War One (1941-1918).

James Hamilton Mackenzie studied at the Glasgow School of Art and at the Instituto de Belli Arti in Florence. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute.
