Afghan spectacles and case, 1879 (c)

Spectacles of glass and wire, case made of papier-mâché.

This curious souvenir was acquired by Edward Orford Kelly, a soldier in the 25th Regiment of Foot (King's Own Borderers). The regiment was stationed in the Khyber Pass throughout the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880) and took part in various operations to protect the vital lines of communication with India.
