Bombed houses and trees, Festubert, 1914

Pen and ink drawing by J. M. Tulloch, 1914.

This drawing depicts the ruins of Festubert, a small village to the east of Béthune in France, where the 34th Prince Albert Victor's Own Poona Horse were engaged in late November and December 1914. During the fighting there, Lieutenant Frank de Pass of the regiment became the first Jewish recipient of the Victoria Cross and also the first Indian Army officer to win the award in World War One (1914-1918).
