Allied Victory Medal 1914-19 awarded to Lance-Corporal Albert Haughton, 23rd Battalion, The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment)
Circular, bronze medal designed by William McMillan with a figure of Winged Victory holding a palm branch on the obverse. On the reverse, the inscription, 'The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919', within a laurel wreath. The medal ribbon is missing.
The 23rd Battalion first went into action at Flers-Courcelette on the Somme on 15 September 1916. Six Commonwealth divisions were involved in the operation. Although Haughton's division (the 41st) eventually secured Flers, he was one of 32 soldiers from his battalion lost in the attack. His body was never recovered but he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.
