Brass cartouche box, Russian Army, 1855 (c)

This brass Russian naval cartouche, or cartridge, box was captured by Lieutenant George Priestly of the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) at Sevastopol in 1855.

Lieutenant Priestly served in the Crimea from 17 June 1855. The day after his arrival there, he took part in the first assault on the Redan and on 8 September 1855 he commanded the Grenadier Company in the second assault. He was awarded the Crimea War Medal with a clasp for Sevastopol and also the Sardinian and Turkish Crimea Medals. He later served in the suppression of the mutiny in the Bengal Army during 1857.
