'Pte Edward Dwyer, V.C.', 1915

Cigarette card, Number 40 from the 2nd series of 'The Great War Victoria Cross Heroes', one of 8 sets of 25 cigarette cards, issued by Gallaher Limited, Belfast and London, 1915-1916.

Portrait of Private Edward Dwyer, 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, wearing his Victoria Cross, after a photograph by Central Press.

The reverse of the card summarises Dwyer's act of gallantry. It records that, 'Private Edward Dwyer, V.C. (1st Batt. East Surrey Regiment) won this honour for conspicuous bravery on Hill 60, April 20th, 1915. As his trench was being heavily assailed by German bomb throwers, he clambered on to the parapet and so persistently bombed the enemy that they had to retire. He also showed great devotion by leaving his trench under fire to help wounded comrades.'.

Dwyer, promoted to Corporal, was later killed in action at Guillemont, on 3 September 1916.

Cigarette cards were produced from the mid 1870s until the end of World War Two (1939-1945). Used to strengthen thin cigarette packs the cards were quickly developed into advertising devices. Series of cards covering every conceivable subject, from sportsmen to flora and fauna, were produced to encourage collectors and potential smokers alike.

One of a collection of 103 cigarette cards.
