'Over the Rhine and tanks going through the airborne landing area, to join up with our infantry F.D.Ls', 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry, 25 March 1945
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry, World War Two, North West Europe, 1945.
A Sherman tank of 'C' Squadron, having crossed the River Rhine, moves to support infantry in 'F.D.Ls', Forward Defended Localities. The tank passes Horsa gliders used during the Operation VARSITY, the successful airborne assault which landed large numbers of troops and equipment on the previous day. These aircraft were some of over 1,300 American and British gliders which crossed the river in support of 21st Army Group's drive into northern Germany.
