On 11 December 1917, General Sir Edmund Allenby, the commander of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, chose to make his entrance into the holy city of Jerusalem on foot via the Jaffa Gate.

The 9th Hodson's Horse were deployed to the Middle East in 1918 and remained in the region until December 1920.
