'A Souvenir of the Great War', 1916 (c)

Printed red, yellow and cream cotton handkerchief, manufacturer unknown, 1916 (c).

Central illustration of the 1839 Treaty of London, around it are vignettes with artillery, infantry and cavalry, an airship, aircraft, and battleships and the flags of the Allies. Around the edges of the handkerchief are 28 portraits of senior military, political and royal figureheads of World War One (1914-1918). The portraits are of Lord Kitchener, General Joffre, General French, General Leman, General Allenby, General Smith-Dorrien, Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia, King George V, Lord Fisher, Lord Roberts, the Maharajah of Behar, Herbert Asquith, Andrew Bonar Law, Lord Lansdowne, Sir Edward Grey, General Douglas Haig, Sir David Henderson, Admiral Jellicoe, Rear Admiral Beatty, Winston Churchill, General Botha, Colonel Sam Hughes, Peter I of Serbia, Czar Nicholas II of Russia and the King Albert I of Belgium, Emperor (Mikado) Taisho of Japan, President Poincaré of France, and Charles Hardinge, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, Viceroy of India.
