Pathan officer of the Punjab Irregular Cavalry, 1860 (c)

The British conquest of the Punjab in 1849 brought about the formation of the Punjab Irregular Force, nominally under the control of the Bengal Army (1200 miles away in Calcutta), but not formally part of it. In 1865 the force was renamed the Punjab Frontier Force.
