Studies of British artillerymen, 1914 (c)

Charcoal and white wash drawing by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1914 (c).

Studies of British gunners in action and wounded on the Western Front in 1914.

Wollen produced works relating to two celebrated actions featuring British artillery in the early stages of World War One (1914-1918). They featured the 37th Battery Royal Field Artillery at the Battle of Le Cateau on the 26 August 1914 and 'L' Battery, Royal Horse Artillery at Néry on 1 September 1914. These studies may be for a work relating to the latter action.

From a sketchbook of 28 sheets of charcoal and white wash drawings by William Barns Wollen.
