Interior of Guard Room, with soldiers of the Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards, 1840 (c)

The soldiers shown are a Life Guards non-commissioned officer (NCO) in stable dress; a trooper of the Royal Horse Guards in dismounted full dress; a senior NCO in full dress; a Dragoon Guard in full dress and a trooper of Life Guards in stable dress and forage cap.

From 1820, the two regiments of Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards, comprising the Household Cavalry, took turns to perform guard duties for the King at Windsor and in London. In July each year the three regiments each moved to their next location, passing in turn from Windsor to Regent's Park Barracks and then to Hyde Park Barracks.
