'The Thanksgiving Day at Pretoria, 8 June 1902 Three Cheers for the King'
Photograph by B Alter, Boer War (1899-1902), 1902.
On 8 June 1902 some 6,000 troops lined Church Square for a thanksgiving service to mark the end of the War, conducted by the Archbishop of Cape Town and the Bishop of Zululand. The proceedings began with the presentation by Lord Kitchener of the Royal Red Cross to 11 nursing sisters, and VCs to several soldiers. After the service, 'God Save the King' was sung by Briton and Boer alike, and Kitchener called for three cheers for King Edward VII.
