Colour Party of the 1st Battalion, The King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry), Deolali, 1921

Photograph, India, 1921.

The 1st Battalion had arrived in India in 1919 and was stationed at Mhow and then Quetta. In early 1921 it was transferred to Mesopotamia. Deolali was an Army transit camp about 100 miles north-east of Bombay. An unpopular and boring posting, it was said to drive soldiers mad. This is the origin of the popular phrase 'gone doolally'.

One of five photographs relating to Claude George Headley, East Lancashire Regiment, 1920-1929.
