Iodine ampoule associated with Private Thomas Hewitt, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, in Mesopotamia, in 1916

On 5 April 1916, during fighting at Umm-el-Hannah in Mesopotamia (now Iraq), Private Hewitt of 6th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was shot in the leg with this bullet from a Mauser rifle. Although he survived the campaign Hewitt is recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as having died of wounds on 22 October 1918. His grave is in Tonge Cemetery in Bolton, Lancashire.
