Ration biscuit owned by Gunner T Austen, 86th Battery, Royal Artillery, World War One, 1916 (c)

The notoriously hard British Army biscuits could crack teeth if not first soaked in tea or water! Other unpopular foods consumed in the trenches included 'Maconochie's beef and vegetable stew', a concoction that had more fat and gristle than meat.
