Moving the wounded by light railway near Messines, 7 June 1917
Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.
During the Battle of Messines (7-14 June 1917) light railways, also known as 'trench railways', were used to bring up supplies and ammunition. They were also used to remove casualties to a position further back where they were then met by ambulances.
