'Joan of Arc', 1918 (c)

Chromolithograph reproduction of an original by Alfred Pearse, 1918 (c), published as part of a mounted set, 'The Angels at Mons', by S H and Company Limited, Clerkenwell, London, 1920 (c).

A battle scene from early on in World War One (1914-1918), with French soldiers advancing in blue greatcoats and red trousers, carrying rifles with fixed bayonets, while a ghostly figure of St Joan in armour mounted on a horse leads the advance.

The image is mounted onto thin card, with the title and explanatory text from 'The Occult Review' printed below, reporting a story told by wounded French soldiers of the appearance on a battlefield of a vision of St Joan and the subsequent retreat of German forces.

From a collection of items relating to the career of George Arthur William Kennard who served with The Buffs (East Kent Regiment).
