Memorial brooch crafted from a collar dog of Second Lieutenant John Leslie Wellesley-Millar, 1916 (c)
Wellesley-Millar, of 1st Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), was killed in action aged 18 at the Battle of Morval on 15 September 1916. This badge was originally a collar dog (an alternative name for a collar badge) belonging to him which was converted into a brooch by his mother Edith after his death.
The dragon was the traditional emblem of The Buffs. According to legend, it was adopted as it was one of the supporters of the royal arms of Queen Elizabeth I, who issued the warrant for the raising of the regiment in 1572.
