'A corner of Mozza. Mk III flame thrower destroyed whilst "doing a Tiger" and tank tracks of 44RTR who forced the top of the track the morning after the occupation of Licolle Ridge', Mozzagrogna, Italy, 1943
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, Italy, 1943.
Mozzagrogna saw heavy fighting in November 1943. Allied troops took the town but were counter-attacked and driven out. Tanks of the 44th Royal Tank Regiment helped recapture the town. This picture shows the bitter nature of the street-fighting in the town. The wreck of a German Pzkfw III flamethrower tank blocks a road with the turret lying alongside the hull of the tank.
