Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, Italy, 1943.
Gurkha troops probably near the town of Mozzagrogna, Abruzzo, Italy. The town was captured from the Germans in November 1943 after a bitter fight. The wounded men are loaded on to a mule fitted with seats for casualty evacuation. The mules wear fringed eye guards made of rope to keep insects at bay.
