Egypt Medal 1882-89, with clasp, 'Suakin 1885', awarded to Trooper Whitter, New South Wales Artillery
Circular, silver campaign medal with, on the obverse, the veiled head of Queen Victoria, with the inscription in Latin, 'Victoria Regina et Imperatrix' (Victoria, Queen and Empress). On the reverse, a sphinx on a plinth with the word 'Egypt' above. Suspended on a blue and white striped ribbon with the clasp, 'Suakin 1885'.
Instituted in October 1882 for the Egyptian war of that year, this medal was extended to include the later campaigns in Egypt and Sudan up to 1889. Thirteen clasps were issued, including Suakin (20 December 1888), an engagement that saw Major-General Francis Grenfell inflict over 1000 casualties on a Mahdist force for the cost of only 12 British and Egyptian soldiers.
