Sketches of First World War soldiers, including some preliminary studies for the oil paintings, 'The Territorials at Pozières, 23 July 1916' and 'Our "Little Contemptibles"', by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1917 (c)
Charcoal and wash sketches from a sketchbook by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1917 (c).
The sketches in the lower half of the page are studies for the oil painting, 'Our "Little Contemptibles"'. They depict men of the British Expeditionary Force, in action on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918).
The figures in the upper half of the page are of British infantrymen in helmets fighting later on in the First World War. The Soldier advancing with fixed bayonet and the bomber throwing a grenade are identifiable figures in Wollen's final painting, 'The Territorials at Pozières, 23 July 1916' .
Both completed oil paintings are part of the National Army Museum Collection (NAM. 1998-04-49 and NAM. 1959-11-303).
