The final assault on Pieter's Hill during Boer War (1899-1902) undertaken by the Princess Victoria's (Royal Irish Fusiliers) supported by the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

On 27 February 1900 Major General Geoffrey Barton's 6th Brigade, undertook an attack on the formidable position of Pieter's Hill. This formed part of a wider assault against Boer positions along the Tugela River which aimed to bring about the relief of the besieged town of Ladysmith. Following a hard day's fighting, the Princess Victoria's (Royal Irish Fusiliers), supported by men of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers undertook a desperate attack to take the remaining enemy positions on the hill. Three companies of the Royal Irish Fusiliers advanced into a hail of fire, which inflicted severe casualties upon them, including all of their officers. However, the Fusiliers succeeded in reaching their objective and clung on grimly until night when the Boer's withdrew.
