DFM group awarded to Colour Sergeant George Frederick Stremes, Glider Pilot Regiment and The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment)

George Frederick Stremes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) for gallantry as a staff sergeant at Arnhem on 18 September 1944, when the glider he was flying was hit by enemy fire. He and his assistant pilot were badly injured but he managed to land the craft, thus saving the lives of his passengers. Subsequently taken prisoner of war he made several escape attempts before being liberated on 6 April 1945.
