HMS 'Antrim' near South Georgia, 1982
Photograph by WO2 David Langham, 81 Ordnance Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, South Atlantic (Falklands War), 1982.
HMS 'Antrim' (launched in 1967) was a County-class destroyer and served as the flagship during the re-capture of South Georgia in April 1982. A Wessex helicopter from 'Antrim' rescued the Special Air Service (SAS) troops that had got into difficulty on the island's Fortuna Glacier. Flying in treacherous conditions the helicopter picked up 16 men instead of the normal four man capacity. These included several aircrew from two helicopters that had crashed during an earlier rescue attempt.
From a collection of photographs relating to the South Atlantic (Falklands War) (1982), April-July 1982, taken by WO2 David Langham, 81 Ordnance Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
