Sorting the mail at a Field Post Office, January 1917
Photograph, Word War One, Salonika (1915-1918), 1917.
An efficient mail service was critical in maintaining the morale of British soldiers on active service. Field Post Offices were therefore established wherever troops were stationed. They dealt with millions of parcels and letters. Although it only took two days for a letter to reach men serving on the Western Front, it took much longer to post letters to men in far away Salonika.
One of 11 copy photographs associated with postal services during World War One.
