'Bristol's New Battalion Barrack Room', interior of a barrack room, 12th (Service) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, 1914 (c)

Photographic postcard, 1914 (c).

The 12th (Service) Battalion was formed in Bristol at the end of August 1914 as part of Kitchener's 'New Army'. It was known as the 'new Bristol Battalion, or 'Bristol's Own' and formed part of the Gloucestershire Regiment. It landed in France on 21 November 1915 and fought the rest of the First World War on the Western Front, being disbanded there in October 1918.

The improvised beds and large quantity of clothing and bedding indicates this image was taken soon after the battalion had been raised.

From a collection of photographs belonging to Lieutenant R H Yeoman, 7th (Service) Battalion Duke of Edinburgh's Own (Wiltshire Regiment).
