Gurkha soldiers resting in a trench at Gallipoli, 1915
Photograph, World War One, Gallipoli (1915).
During the Gallipoli campaign the Gurkhas reinforced their reputation as tough and fearless soldiers. On 9 August 1915 they temporarily stormed the highest point on the peninsular at Sari Bair ridge, becoming the only troops in the whole campaign to look down on the Straits below - the ultimate objective of the landings. Gurkha units that served in the Dardanelles included 1st Battalion, 5th Gurkha Rifles, 1st Battalion, 6th Gurkha Rifles, and 2nd Battalion, 10th Gurkha Rifles.
From an album of photographs compiled by Lieutenant (later Lieutenant-General Sir) Reginald Arthur Savory, 14th Sikh Regiment.
