Looking from Lone Pine to Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli, 1915
Photograph, World War One, Gallipoli (1915).
Chunuk Bair was one of the highest points on the Sari Bair range. These were the main objective of the offensive of early August 1915 when the Allies tried to break out of Anzac Cove. Although the peak was captured by British and New Zealand troops, their positions proved untenable and they were driven off by massed Turkish assaults led by Mustafa Kemal on 10 August.
From a scrapbook containing 143 photographs, 1901-1940. Inscribed on cover 'C E Pym, 5th Lancers'.
