'Zero hour! Prompt to the second, our men go over the top in a grand assault on Wytachaete Wood', 1917
Stereoscopic photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.
Wytschaete village and wood were captured by the British during the Battle of Messines which began on 7 June 1917. Located on a ridge about a mile north of Messines, they overlooked the British positions on the lower ground so were two of the main targets of the operation. They remained in British hands until the German Spring Offensive of 1918.
