Gun blown up by the Germans at Fort C, Tsingtao, November 1914

Photograph, World War One, Far East (1914-1918), 1914.

British and Japanese forces besieged the German port of Tsingtao in China between September and November 1914. During this time it was subjected to a heavy bombardment by Japanese howitzers that damaged the port facilities and its defences. Prior to surrendering the port, the Germans destroyed many of the surviving guns to prevent them from falling into Allied hands.

From an album of 65 photographs compiled by Brig N W Barnardiston, commanding British troops in North China, 1914.
